The Effect of Steroid Hormene Synthetic and Phosphorolytic Reactions Catalyzed by Phosphorylase

Abstract
Although the synthetic action of plant phosphorylase has been widely studied, the knowledge of phosphorolytic action of this enzyme on starch is limited so far, and the results are often conflicting.
The present work was undertaken with the aim of studying the effect of estrogens, androgens and progesterons on plant phosphorylase-catalyzed reactions both phosphorolytic and synthetic.
The results were as follows:
1. Estrone-3-methyl ether, estradiol-3-methyl ether and estriol-3-methyl ether activated phosphoro¡©lytic reaction catalyzed by plant phosphorylase.
2. Dehydroepiandrosterone, testosterone and etiocholanolone activated phosphorolytic reaction catalyzed by plant phosphorylase.
3. Dehydroepiandrosterone inhibited synthetic reaction catalyzed by plant phosphorylase.
4. Progesterone, 513-pregnan 3a, 20a diol and 5S-pregnan 3a, 20a diol acetate had no effect on both synthetic and phosphorolytic reaction catalyzed by plant phosphorylase.
